What does a slab cost in Dalton?

A slab is usually cheaper per foot than a driveway of the same area, because it is a simple rectangle. Fewer radii, fewer edges, one continuous pour, and the forms go up quickly. That advantage disappears the moment the design adds a thickened edge, a footing trench or a step down at a door.

What pushes a slab toward the top of the range is what it has to carry. A four inch slab for garden storage is a different item from a six inch slab with a thickened perimeter that will hold a metal building and a vehicle lift. Both are called a shop slab.

Who issues the permit here?

The ordinance is also more relaxed than people expect in one place. Its definition of an accessory structure covers open sheds and shelters of two hundred square feet or less, and states plainly that a building permit is not required for accessory structures.

That is not a blanket exemption. A slab carrying something habitable, wired, plumbed or large is part of a building, and a building needs a permit. The distinction is worth confirming for your specific plan rather than assuming either way.

What is a thickened edge and do I need one?

It is extra depth around the perimeter, and you need it if walls sit on the slab.

A plain four inch slab spreads load evenly across its area. That is fine for storage. It is not fine when a wall bears down along one line, because the slab has to carry a concentrated load at its weakest point, the edge.

A thickened edge takes the perimeter down to eight or twelve inches for a foot or so inward, so the wall load lands on something deeper. It is poured monolithically with the slab, in one operation, which is why it has to be decided before the pour rather than added after.

The alternative is a separate footing below frost depth with the slab poured inside it. That is more work and more concrete, and it is what a heavier or taller structure wants.

Which one applies depends on the building, so this is a question for whoever is supplying the shop or garage. Metal building suppliers usually publish a required foundation detail, and it is worth getting that document before pricing the concrete.

What goes under a slab?

Compacted graded aggregate, and on clay the compaction matters more than the depth.

Four to six inches of aggregate is the working figure. Whitfield County is red clay with chert and weathered shale through it, and clay holds water, swells with it and shrinks without it. A slab poured onto uncompacted fill settles unevenly, and an uneven settlement under a rigid slab is a crack.

For a slab that will be a finished floor, a vapour barrier goes on top of the aggregate. Concrete is not waterproof, and ground moisture travels up through it. On a shop floor that means damp patches and rust on anything stored at floor level. Under a coating or an epoxy finish it means the finish lifts.

The barrier costs very little and cannot be retrofitted. If there is any chance the building will be finished, insulated or heated later, put it in now.

How thick, and what reinforcement?

Four inches for storage, five or six for vehicles, and the reinforcement depends on the load rather than the thickness.

Four inches over a properly compacted base handles foot traffic, shelving and garden equipment. Where a car or truck is parked, five inches is a reasonable minimum and six is better. Where a lift is planned, the lift manufacturer will specify the thickness and the concrete strength, and that specification wins over any general rule.

Mesh or fibre does not stop a slab cracking. It holds the faces of a crack together so the crack stays tight rather than opening and stepping. On a floor that is the difference between a line you can sweep and an edge that catches a trolley wheel.

Control joints do the rest. On a floor, saw cut joints are usually preferred over tooled ones because they are neater and can be cut once the concrete has set enough to hold an edge. Spacing at around ten feet for a four inch slab is sensible, with joints at inside corners.

What about the mix and the finish?

Air entrainment for anything exposed, and a finish chosen for what the floor is for.

An exterior slab or an open carport takes the weather, so it wants air entrained concrete at four to seven percent. North Georgia sees sixty to eighty freeze thaw cycles a year, and unentrained concrete scales under them.

An enclosed heated floor is a different case, and a smooth power floated finish that would be dangerous outside is exactly right indoors. A broom finish gives grip where a floor gets wet. A power float gives a hard dense surface that sweeps clean and takes a coating well.

Curing is the step that gets rushed. Concrete gains strength through a reaction that needs water, and most of the useful strength arrives in the first seven days. A slab left to dry in a hot shed loses that water to the air and never reaches the strength it was ordered at. Covering it or spraying a curing compound costs almost nothing and cannot be done retrospectively.
